CORDELE — Shirley V. Shaffer, 81 died Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Fellowship Home at Cordelia Manor. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 31, 2017 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral. The family will receive friends prior the service beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Mrs. Shaffer was born in Lumber City, Ga. to Thad Varnadoe and Thelma Pauline Sanders Varnadoe. She was the widow of Harold Shaffer. She was a retired teacher with 27 years of service to the Crisp County Board of Education.

Shirley was a member of the Cordele First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Cordele Symphony Club, the retired Teachers’ Association and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, and the Thalian Club. She was also known for her love of playing bridge with others.

Surviving Shirley are her brothers: John L. Varnadoe of Austell, Ga. and Larry (Jean) Varnadoe of Baxley, Ga.; her nieces and nephews: John M. (Lori) Varnadoe, Mark E. Goldwire, Jennifer Lynn (David) Douglas and Laura (Phil) Douglas; eight great nieces and nephews; and eight great-great-nieces and nephews.
