Funeral services for Lanier “Buddy” Hughes, 85, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 20, 2018 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes passed away July 18, 2018 at Crisp Regional Hospital. He was born in Dooly County, Ga. to Glenn Shelby Hughes and Lena Elizabeth Bailey Hughes. He is preceded in death by three siblings: Ford Hughes, Becky Butler and Alice Lovett.

“Buddy” was a retired cold storage manager for the Golden Peanut Company. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army. He was a member of the Penia Baptist Church and the Field Trials Association. He was also a member of the original Pinehills Country Club. He was also active in his community by coaching Little League.

He is survived by his wife: Ruby Nell Hughes of Cordele; his sons: Mike Hughes of Blackshear, Ga. and Rick (Cherri Thompson) Hughes of Cordele; his siblings: Bailey Hughes, Lamar (Glenda) Hughes, Charles Hughes and Arlene (Charles) Holmes all of Cordele and Faye Souter of Seville and Henry (Dawn Taylor) Hughes of Albany; his grandchildren: Amy (Ray) Teston and Michael (Emily) Hughes, Jr. all of Patterson, Ga. and Jennifer (John) Averill of Byromville and Clint Hughes of Cordele; and his great-grandchildren: Landon Teston, Beau Teston, Bailey Grace Averill, Sam Hughes, Novalee Hughes and John Monta Averill.
