Obituary for Louis James Roobin

Louis James Roobin
CORDELE — Louis James Roobin, died peacefully on the afternoon of June 28, 2018. Louis was born February 2, 1933 to Joe and Margaret Mixon Roobin. As a lifelong resident of Cordele, Georgia he was active and well-known in his community.

In his youth, he displayed athletic ability on the track and football teams of the Cordele High School Bulldogs. As a member of the Roobin family, he was introduced into the family business, Roobin's Department Store, at a very young age. It became apparent that he was as gifted at clothing sales as he was athletics. Over the years, he developed a large and loyal clientele throughout South Georgia. On many occasions, Louis was known to say, "I may not remember your name, but I always remember your size". He was known for his quick wit and his talent for joke telling. He faithfully served his many customers until the closing of Roobin's Department Store in the early 1990s.

Louis was a long-time member of the Cordele Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing and had a passion for building and flying remote control model airplanes which led him to become one of the original founders of the Flint Flyers Model Airplane Club at Georgia Veterans State Park.

Louis is survived by his three children and their families: Janice Roobin Brannen (Ronnie), Patti Roobin Smith (Ricky), and Jay Roobin (Donna) along with three grandchildren: Matt Brannen, Marci Brannen, and Brooke Smith Armoney and two step-grandchildren: Justin Stokes and Haley Stokes. He is also survived by a sister, Beverly Roobin Owens.

There will be a celebration of Louis's life on Saturday, June 30 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Hughes and Wright Funeral Home preceded by visitation at 1:00 PM. The family will have a private burial. Online condolences may be left at www.hughesandwright.com. Hughes & Wright Funeral Home, Inc. is entrusted with these arrangements.
