Obituary for Sarah Carden Summers

Sarah Carden  Summers
Funeral services for Sarah Lee Carden will be as follows: Visitation: Monday 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Hughes & Wright Funeral home, Funeral Services 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by burial at Sunnyside Cemetery. After Burial, a gracious luncheon will be provided at the Sarah Summers Community Clubhouse, formally known as Midway Clubhouse, located next to Midway United Methodist Church, on Midway Church Road off of Hwy 257.

Sarah Lee Carden, daughter of the late James Martin Carden and the late Lula Musselwhite Carden of the Hatley Community, was born June 17th, 1926 and died May 19th, 2018, just one month shy of her 92nd birthday.

Sarah was married for 48 years and preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Heard Summers, Jr. Her eight brothers and sisters; Van R. Carden, Sam T. Carden, Max L. Carden, Tom K. Carden, Violet C. Owen, Mary C. Mitchell, Pansy C. Briggs and Jimmie Ruth Williams all preceded her in death. She is survived by her son Carden Heard Summers (Janis), grandson Weston Heard Summers, granddaughter Jade Lee Summers, all of Cordele, and by several nieces, nephews and extended family.

As a graduate of Pitts High School and Andrew College, she received her B.S. at the University of Georgia and then later earned her Master’s Degree in Teaching/Education from Georgia Southwestern University. Mrs. Summers was a retired educator having taught school for 42 consecutive years in the Crisp County School System.
Always extremely active in the community, she was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church where she served as trustee and Sunday school superintendant. She taught Sunday school at other churches and Midway for 61 years.

Mrs. Summers served as president of both Midway Community Club and the Crisp County Homemakers council for many years. She retained professional membership in the National Teachers Association and the Georgia Education Association. She was a member of many organizations including, member and past president of the Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Teachers Society and the local Alpha Theta Chapter, Retired Teachers Association, member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as district president and the local Cordele Unit 38 president, member of the Fort Early Chapter - National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as president as well as many other positions, member and president of the Cordele Crisp Historical Society, member and past president of the Cordele Symphony Club in the International Music organization. Mrs. Summers was an emeritus member and past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter and past Matrons Club, Ladies Farm Bureau president, Chairperson for the Crisp County Centennial - just to name a few.

After retirement from teaching, Mrs. Summers obtained her Real Estate license and sold Real Estate for 17 years. She served as President of the Cordele Crisp Board of Realtors. Mrs. Summers was devoted to the Cordele Crisp Carnegie Library. She served for 40 years as Chairperson and on the local library board for many years thereafter. She also served on the Lake Blackshear Regional Library Board. Mrs. Summers believed that all children and adults should have access to the best reading material. She was a firm believer that if a person could read and write well, they would never be limited.

Based on her extraordinary community service work, she was selected as the first ever recipient of the “Citizen of the Year” award in a program sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, followed up with the “Woman of the Year” Award. Mrs. Summers was the chairperson for Cordele-Crisp Beautification program years before it became an entity of the city; now known as Clean Community.
