Obituary for Shirley Peavy King

CORDELE - Shirley Peavy King, 73, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 4, 2021, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 7, 2021, at Sunnyside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, seating is limited, masks are required, social distancing should be maintained.

Mrs. King was born in Cordele, Ga. to the late Virgil Algia and Betty Bridges Peavy. She is also preceded in death by her daughter she dearly missed, Sleda King Kitchens, whom she has reunited with again.

She was an insurance agent for 40+ years and retired from Akin Insurance Company. Family and church were her life. She loved her family dearly, especially the grandsons. She was very active in Northern Heights Baptist Church. She was a member of the choir as well as assistant music director. She was also involved in the WMU, the monthly Food and Prayer Distribution, in VBS as a teacher, the church’s Easter program, and many other areas of church life. She was also a volunteer with the Crisp Regional Auxiliary and an avid reader.

She is survived by her husband: Johnny King of Cordele; her son: Sean King and his fiancé Tara Auston of Dothan, Ala., her sisters: Pat Hewitt and her husband Mike of Cordele and Mona Trotter and her husband Mike of Leesburg; her grandsons: Tyler King, Garrett King, Jordan Kitchens, and Jackson Carelock; her son-in-law: Walter Kitchens, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
