Obituary for Opal Flippo Wood (Opal Vonn)

CORDELE — Opal Flippo Wood, 87, of Cordele, formally of Albany, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, at Blackshear Villa. She was also known by her stage name, Opal Vonn. A private family service will be held.

Mrs. Wood was born to Donnie Maddox Flippo and Marvin Flippo in Guin, Ala. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Verdis Flippo, Wymon Flippo, Julian Flippo, J. D. Flippo, Mary Gay Whitley and Dorothy Kelley; and her grandson: John David Wright, Jr.

Opal was a member of the Christian Covenant Church in Albany. She was known as a “spunky” lady and full of life. She enjoyed yard work and animals. She was a wine connoisseur, especially red wines. Among other hobbies, traveling was a favorite. She also loved her family, husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Opal had a deep love for music and enjoyed singing. For over two decades, she performed for and entertained countless crowds many times to packed venues. She was the founder and leader for the bands “Daybreeze” and “Jasper” but was most widely known for her showband “Opal Vonn and Encore.” After retiring from playing live venues, Opal continued using her voice for what she saw as her true passion and calling…sing for the Lord.

She is survived by her husband: Charles “Bob” Wood of Cordele; her children: Jean Goodman Suggs of Cordele, William Myrther (Rachel) Goodman of Albany and Susan Goodman of Leesburg; her grandchildren: Robert “Bobby” (Heather) Wright, Justin Daniel (Jessica) Wright, Donovan (Tammy) Prothro, Amber, Goodman, Austin Goodman and Dreaher Goodman; and her great-grandchildren: Emree Wright, Elayna Wright, Bradley Wright, Devin Wright, Dyllan Wright, Lexie Norman and Madison Kent.

The family suggests that contributions in Opal’s memory be sent to Christian Covenant Church or a local No-Kill Shelter.
