Obituary

RET SCPO Kyle Ranze McMillan, 83, of Cordele died Thursday, July 18, 2019, at Crisp Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2019 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral. Burial will follow in the Sunnyside Cemetery Veteran’s Section.

Kyle was born June 5, 1936 in Ocilla, Georgia to the late John Henry McMillan and Juda McClelland McMillan. After graduating from Irwin County High School, he joined the United States Navy where he completed boot camp and engineer training in San Diego, California. He toured the world on various aircraft carriers, destroyers, destroyer tenders and a Seventh Fleet Flagship cruiser home ported in Gaeta, Italy. Some of the ships he served on were the USS Franklin Roosevelt, USS Little Rock, USS Yellowstone and USS McCormick.

He was a Boiler Tender instructor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and also served for two years in the Army Reserves. After retiring from the Navy in 1975 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, he was employed for 5 years with the Cooper River DuPont Plant in South Carolina as an engineering supervisor. He relocated his family to Atlanta, Georgia in 1980 and with a partner created American Boiler House in Tucker where he served as vice-president until retiring and moving to Cordele in 2000.

Rarely idle, Kyle served as a volunteer for the Dorchester County Old Fort Fire Department while living in Summerville, South Carolina. In Atlanta, he attended evening classes at the police academy in Athens where he graduated in the top 5 as a Sharp Shooter. He then served on the first Gwinnett County Volunteer Deputy Sheriff Augmentation Force where he served at least 20 hours a week.

Kyle was an avid reader and researcher, enjoyed wood working projects, cooking, hunting and fishing and always carried fishing gear in the back of his truck in case he found a place to "wet a hook". After coming to live in Cordele, he could typically be found on Lake Blackshear fishing in his boat or at the McMillan farm in Irwin County. He was an active member of Northern Heights Baptist Church.

Kyle is survived by his wife, Peggy McMillan, two daughters, Leah Johnson (Robert) of Cordele, Livia Ousley (Ron) of Macon, one grandson, Seth Harper of California, two brothers, Eugene McMillan (Janis) of Cartersville, Rev. John McMillan (Ann) of Ocilla, and numerous nieces and nephews.
