Obituary

Joyce Dent Moore, 86, of Vienna died Thursday, April 1, 2020, at Crisp Regional Hospital. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and governmental restrictions, a private graveside service and burial will be held at the Vienna City Cemetery.

Mrs. Moore was born in Butler, Ga. to the late Mack C. Dent and Agnes Lorene Hatchett Dent. She is the widow of H. Fred Moore, Jr. She is also preceded in death by her grandson, Lee Harris, Jr., her step-son, Rick Moore, and her step-grandson, Trey Moore. She is also preceded in death by her siblings: Audrey Taunton, Tot Sewell, Kate Woodard, Mary Wright, Jack Dent, John Dent, Mack Dent and George Dent.

At the age of 12, she came to Cordele. She attended O-Neal Elementary School and graduated from Cordele High School. She was a para-pro with the Dooly County Board of Education and a homemaker. She loved her Lord and had a strong faith. She was a devoted and active member, as long as her health permitted, of Vienna First Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and many other positions when asked. She was a devoted wife and mother that made sure her children were churched and raised in a Godly home.

She is survived by her children: Rusty (Kay) Gilmore of Vienna, Ga., Doug (Debra) Gilmore of Navarre, Fla., Sharon (Lee) Harris of Vienna, Monica (David) Simmons and Dawn Gilmore all of Cordele; her step-daughters: Monica (James) Dominey and Claire (Charles) Knight all of Valdosta, Ga.; her grandchildren: T. J. Willard, Rob Simmons, Ben Harris, Alicia Hair, Dusty Gilmore, Jonathon Gilmore and Paul Gilmore; her great-grandchildren: Conner Harris, Karson Harris, Avery Harris, Amelia Harris, Ashton Harris, Lilly Grace Hair and Mason Gilmore; her seven step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her furbaby, Buddy.

The family also wishes to acknowledge the care, love and devotion that Mrs. Moore’s sitters Marlene Harpe, Rosie Zanders and Jessie Warren have shown to her. It is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Moore’s memory to the Open Hearts Thrift Store, 311 Hudson Road, Vienna, GA 31092 or the Burn Foundation of America, 3514 J. Dewey Gray Circle, Building C, Augusta, GA 30909.

I am so saddened by the loss of Ms. Joyce. We created such great memories at the Thursday Afternoon Beauty Shop Parties. She had such a great wit, I will never forget some of her stories. I know she was ready to go home and I hope the family will find comfort in their precious memories of her. Loved her dearly, Charlotte Vestal

Monica and family - I'm so saddened to hear about your sweet Mom. She was a beautiful lady with a beautiful heart. I've known all her brothers and sisters for so many years and they were always a special family, always happy, always having fun. They can now welcome her home to the Dent reunion. I pray for comfort and peace for you all in the days ahead. I love you.
