Our History


Hughes & Wright Funeral Home, Inc. opened on April 12, 1977 with co-owners Charles L. Hughes and A.J. Wright.

Charles L. Hughes moved to Cordele in 1936 and served almost 40 years as a licensed Funeral Director. He passed away in 1996 and is survived by his wife Dell Faircloth Hughes.

A.J. Wright, a lifelong resident of Crisp County, is a graduate of Crisp County High School and the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Dallas, Texas. He served for 12 years as Crisp County Coroner and is a member of the Cordele Lions Club and Cordele First Baptist Church. He is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer.

Jimmy Black, a native of Crisp County joined the funeral home in 1980. He is a graduate of Crisp County High School and the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, Georgia. Jimmy is married to the former Tracy Howell of Turner County and they have two children, Lauren and Eric. They are members of Cordele First Baptist Church where Jimmy serves as a Deacon and Youth Sunday School teacher. He is a member of the Cordele Lions Club and is a Cordele City Commissioner and serves as vice-chairman of the Crisp County Health Department. He is a licensed Funeral Director, Embalmer and Insurance Agent.

Tommy Kilcrease, a native of Crisp County joined the funeral home in 1985 and is a graduate of Crisp County High School and the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of the Northern Heights Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon and church organist. He is a licensed Funeral Director, Embalmer and Insurance agent.

Brandon Roobin, a native of Crisp County is graduate of Crisp Academy and the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of the Cordele First Baptist Church and is a licensed Embalmer.
